As handspinners, we have the option to make yarns that just perfectly suit the fleece or the project we have in mind. Unfortunately, because our yarns are unique, it's difficult to find a commercial pattern that uses what is often an "odd" gauge.

On this page I feature patterns knit with my own handspun and it's unusual gauge. I start with a basic sock template that will teach you everything you need to know to knit socks from your own handspun, then expand on those ideas with additional patterns. Be your own designer - think outside the gauge box! Add a stitch if you need to! Change the motif! It's only knitting, after all...

Blocks and Checks Socks

Knit by Vicki in CA Modeled by Arlene

This pattern template will guide you through making socks from your handspun yarns. It features instructions for a Dutch heel and wedge toe in many gauges and is simple enough for a beginning sock knitter. This template forms a base for the other handspun designs shown below - the chatty instructions are here, and the designs below "plug in" to this template and have much more abbreviated written instructions (suitable for an experienced sock knitter.) This template includes the Blocks and Checks pattern.

Skill level: Adventurous Beginner - You should be able to knit and purl, but need not have made a sock before. The instructions are clear and chatty and have plenty of sock shaping detail.

Vicki used a handspun Shetland X yarn in about worsted weight that I spun from roving and left its natural color.

This pattern features a textured cuff and instep with a plain foot and wedge toe.

This pattern motif is fully charted with written instructions for shaping, but no line-by-line motif instructions.

Skill level: Adventurous Beginner - You should be able to knit and purl, but need not have made a sock before if you're using the template above.
