I have deleted the free patterns of 2002 (house cleaning at the beginning of the year is so liberating, don't you think?) but you can still order them from me for postage + copy fees. I may make them available in .pdf format if I get enough favorable response, so e-mail me at mailto:catmccall@msn.com and let me know what you want!
The Quick Holiday Gifts are now on the Small Things page and I will be adding more as time goes on and I get more pics taken. Have a great "small thing" that you'd like published on the web? Send me a pic and your pattern and I'll add it to the page, or I can add a link to your project from my page...

| lace weight mohair yarn |
This month's Free Pattern is a lacy scarf. After all of that stressful Holiday knitting, you need to knit something soft and silky for yourself (or your SO), and this is the perfect project! As a bonus, it only uses one skein of a resonably-priced mohair lace-weight yarn, AND the pattern is easily memorized so you can take it with you.
I used one skein of Grignasco VIP lace-weight mohair/nylon (80%/20%)yarn in a raspberry color. The label (yes, I did find it) says that there are 259 yards per ball, and I had a generous bit left over to add to something else or make something small.
The scarf is a generous 7" wide x 65" long and light as air!
The LYS had only one skein left, so I had to decide on a small project that would best show this limited quantity off, and the Star Rib Mesh Scarf was born!
For purists, the lace pattern can be found in Barbara Walker's First Treasury on page 196. My version is slightly different, but the fabric looks much the same.
I like to slip the first stitch on every row, so I cast on 33 stitches (over two needles so it would be nice and loose) on a US #3 needle and worked garter stitch (knit every row) for 3 ridges and then I began the pattern -
Rows 1 and 3 (WS) Purl
Row 2 - Slip 1, * Yarn Over, Knit 3 Together, Yarn Over, Knit 1 * Repeat from * to * ending Knit 1.
Row 4 - Slip 1, Knit 2 * Yarn Over, Knit 3 together, Yarn Over, Knit 1 * Repeat from * to * ending Knit 3.
I ended the whole thing by working 3 more ridges in garter and binding off - not too tight!
Note: I like to use a Knit 3 Together decrease rather than the Slip 2, Knit 1, Pass the 2 slipped sts over decrease that BW uses, and I've re-written the pattern for my (easier, I think) version. I also eliminated the single decreases at each side...It still looks just fine, dontcha think?
For you chart readers, the chart is below - very legible, if also very large...Tell me what you think.
As always, if you have any questions or problems, you can contact me. Link in the menu bar to the left...
This is the heavier version of the same pattern. The yarn is Rowan Cork in color 038 - Bug - a lovely shade of green - just perfect for showing those Staples people that knitting is fashionable! Two skeins will make a 40" +/- scarf - not too long, not too short...
For this version, cast on 26 stitches and work the pattern the same way. It goes quite fast, so this is a quick gift idea...
Let me know what you think!
